any advice on how to move to america

Post by shazjw28 » Wed Jul 25, 2007 5:57 pm

Hi there,
Can anyone give me some advice.
I live in the UK with my partner, he is an american citizen and we both want to move to the U.S within the next 2 years possibly sooner depending in his work situation here. His mother lives in the U.S and has offered to take us in until we find a place together out there.
Now obviously my problem is, will i be able to get permenant residency?Im guessing the only way i can is through employment as we are not planning to get married anytime soon as we are still very young, and i dont have any family out there.
I really want to move out there with him, but i dont know the best way to go about it. I have read all the information on the U.S embassy website, but i am still unsure.
I am currently a Spammy Spammer/ beauty therapist. Now is that classed as a skilled profession?
thank you for reading my dilema!

I don't think the US has an unmarried partner's visa or equivalent, so if you want to move there you need either;
1. to marry and apply for entry as a spouse
2. to be highly educated and apply under the work criteria

Obviously there are loads of other options, of course, but if you don't want to marry then I don't think he can bring you over any other way. Unfortunately, you get nil points for being a beauty therapist, so entering on your own accord is almost out the window. You need a minimum of a bachelor's degree equivalent to the US degree, and then on top of that relevant work experience. It'll be a lot easier if you had a skill that is in high demand, like nursing, medicine, IT and other Techs, engineering, anything in the medical field, really...but, I do know that with some of these, you need to take and pass exams (nursing and medical sciences).

What is your partner doing here, and what visa is he on?
