An application for his registration as a British citizen can be made at any time after he has attained the age of ten years, providing that for each of the first ten years of her/his life, the number of days on which he was absent from the United Kingdom in that year does not exceed 90.
Information provided is general guidance and does not constitute legal advice.

You need to have Indefinite Leave to Remain for at least one year before you can apply.

It is not the same. I had to wait 4 years once I got my leave to remain in order to apply for ILR.

I got my leave to remain in 2000 so I am not sure how different was it then from today.
