Is an ancestry visa good for someone going for uni?

Post by Lolcats101 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 11:55 am

Hi,

I'm a Canadian national planning on going to Wales for 3rd/final year of uni this September. My uni has been trying to get me to apply for the Tier 4 student visa but I just realized I would be able to apply for the ancestry visa instead. I hope to work while in school but do not have anything lined up and more just planning on trying to find a job 'round town when I get there. I was thinking the ancestry route would be better since I want to work while going to school and the tier 4 wouldn't really allow that. Would this be a practical solution?

Additional questions. For proving my ancestry, I have the full birth certificates for my paternal grandmother (claim is based on), my father and myself. However, we are missing a couple things:
  • 1st. My grandmother no longer has her marriage certificate from when she was first married to my granddad (to which my dad's last name comes from) however she does have her more recent marriage certificate when she remarried which has: her maiden name (would be on her birth certificate), her first name change (name she had when my dad was born and is on his birth certificate) and her current name (which is on her current British passport).

2nd problem: My father is not listed on my birth certificate (no father listed) and I have a different last name (I use my mother's last name as my mum and dad weren't married) however I can provide court custody documents from when I was young listing him as my father (well, guardian but it says "your child" a lot) . Do you think these will be good enough?
Final question: what/how much are the current maintenance funds required for an ancestry visa (can only find it for the tiered visa) Also, could I have less maintenance funds if I can prove I'm paying for my housing up front (living on campus)

I know these are a lot (and probably annoying) questions but thanks in advance everyone! :)

Hi
1*I have an ancestry visa and i personly think its the better option as you will not be restricted by the number of hours a week you can work , also makes it easier when you finish and want a ILR as no need for points based
2* Requirements for ancestry visa (through my Gran aswell and no marriage certificate to prove last name )
your dads birth certificate should show his mothers last name so you can use that
**you will need your grandmothers birth certificate
**grandmothers marriage cert (just hand in the one you have )
**your dads birth certificate
**(your dads marriage cert to you mother if applicable / available)
**your birth cert (**works even for adopted children so just produce all court papers aswell)
** an official letter of appointment for work or 3 offers of employment )
** an offer from a friend that owns a house with enough room to accommodate you , (provide copies of there utility bills) or offer from a hostil inviting your accommodation or signed lease to rent a property
** roughly £5000 in your bank with statement for the past 6 months
** a police clearance certificate showing no criminal convictions
** your birth certificate (full unabridged)
** must be applied for in own country
i got mine over 4 years ago from South Africa so not sure if anything has changed and all info i have given is to the best of my knowledge at the time that i got mine
hope this helps

Hi!

Thanks for the reply!

Just a follow up question. Is secured employment necessary for the visa? I can't see that it is but worried that if I apply it might become an issue. Like I said, I'm *really* going for school and just hoping to work along the way. I don't have any offers or know/have family where I will be living (I'm going to live in mid Wales whereas all my family lives in London) so I don't have any connections *yet* to get a job but once I get there look for a job that will compliment my studies (or any job). Do you foresee that to be an issue?

Thank you! :)

You need to show intention to work as Ancestry is a work category visa. What I did back in 2008 was make contact via email with employment agencies in the area I was going to live and used that and their responses to show 'intention' with my CV attached. I also registered on a number of agency lists.

tbh, not a lot of work opportunities in Wales though, far better in London.
