Visa for my mother to visit Sweden with me.

Post by shopkeeper » Thu Feb 07, 2013 9:49 pm

Hello. My mum has an Indian Passport but she has been a permanent resident in the UK since her marriage 40 years ago.

I am a British national and would be traveling to Sweden for an exhibition my brother is holding. I would really like to take her with me to see her sons work as she is quite old now and this would be a great opportunity for her to do so.

Her Indian Passport has a Residence Permit with the following details listed:

Valid Until: INDEFINITE

Type of permit : Settlement

Remarks: No time limits on holder's stay in the UK

Will she, require a visa considering her UK residence permit, to visit Sweden for a few days with me.

Could someone please advise?

Thank you

Yes. A Schengen visa is required.

Hi,
In principle, your mum should be able to travel to Sweden without visa by virtue of EC regulation. However, the UK has not ratified the Schengen agreement and as such she will require a Schengen visa to travel to Sweden.

Moreover, considering her age and the fact that she possesses an indefinite leave to remain (ie permanent residence) in the UK, she can easily obtain visa to travel to Sweden regardless of her son's exhibition. Your brother's art exhibition in Sweden even makes it more compelling for her to obtain visa.

Having said this, your mum needs to apply for her visa as early as possible because it takes some time to process visa at embassies. I do not know what the situation is in the UK but my advice is that she applies right on time to avoid unnecessary delay.

Good luck.

Harry
