Multi or single entry?

Post by sunnyday » Mon Aug 13, 2007 1:45 pm

For french schengen, do they give you multi entry if you ask for it? and do they give you visas valid for the period of the exact length of your trip or do they give you 90 days visa?

For first time french schengen applicants.

Usually single entry for length of stay for first time applicants. Nothing 100% with the French tho!

Here's a timeline of my experiences of French Schengen visas:

1st visa: Multiple entry - 3 months
2nd visa: Multiple entry - 6 months
3rd visa: Multiple entry - 1 year
4th visa: Multiple entry - 1 year

Bear in mind though that depending on your nationality your milage may vary. If you are from a high risk country your first visa may be a single entry visa valid only for the duration of your trip.

You can't "ask" for a multiple entry visa, they will give you whatever they feel like giving you.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

I think it also depends upon whether the person is a family member of an EU citizen. Before she got a British passport my wife applied for two French-issued Schengen visas.

The first was for 6 months ... the second for 1 year .... both were multi-entry.

You have posted 132 posts and I am not going to wade through those to get the answer to my question ... which is .... what is your UK immigration status? What type of UK visa do you have at present?

Maybe we should all put it in our signature line or make it a mandatory part of the profile?

I'm gonna do mine and my partners now, anything to avoid working....

sunnyday, OK, thanks for posting that. What about previous Schengen visa(s) issued to you? Single or Multi? Certainly if previous one(s) multi I would expect a French-issued one to be multi.

Indeed, assuming that you have never been in "Schengenland" outside the terms of such visa(s) .... you left on or before the expiry date .... no continuous stays exceeding 90 days ... you could get issued with a multi one anyway.

Before deciding upon the application they will consult with the SIS .... a huge database accessible by all the Schengen countries.

They look at other things besides how many times you've got Schengen visas, your nationality etc. My twin sister and I have been in the UK for almost exactly the same length of time, on similar visas/LTRs, and our timelines when we applied for naturalization and UK passports were almost identical. So similar immigration histories... but she never got any Schengen visa longer than 3 months, and I always got either 6 months or a year. We have very different jobs and mine pays rather more than hers - that's the only difference between our applications. So, being a student... the French embassy may well choose to give you a short visa as that's just the sort of thing they do if your occupation or bank balance doesn't suggest a major boost to their economy.
