Switching visas - please help

Post by karamba » Fri Nov 05, 2004 1:29 pm

I'm confused by the conflicting advice offered by IND information line.

My student visa expires on 15 December. I've already finished my studies but I want to apply for a 1-month extension (as a visitor) to spend Xmas & NY eve in London. I'd like to make my application in person, and the question is WHEN can I do it? Do I need to wait until there's less than 1-month of my current student visa remaining? Or can I apply now, when I've still got over a month remaining?

Each time I call the IND they tell me different things. Please shed some light on my question!

The general convention is to go 4 weeks in advance. Therefore if for some unforseen reason there is a problem with your application, then you have the chance to make the amendmends to your application before the expiry of your current visa.

I actually want to apply earlier than 4 weeks in advance. Is this possible? When I ring the IND info line they tell me 'yes' or 'no' depending on who answers.

Still confused,

K.

No idea. I was under the impression that you are not allowed to apply more that 4 weeks in advance from the date of your expiry.

In your case its the difference between 5.5 and 4 weeks. Have you found out if you need to make any appoitments for you vistor visa and if there is any lead time for obtaining one? The lead time at PEOs is generally 2 weeks.

I was planning to apply in person in Croydon. I don't think I need an appointment for a visitor visa.

You're right that the difference is 5.5 and 4 weeks. The problem is I need to make some travel arrangements, but I can't plan anything because my plans depend on whether I am succesfull with my extension as a visitor.

Would appreciate more input.

K.
