English Requirement for Naturalisation

Post by vghiya » Mon Sep 01, 2014 3:43 pm

Hello,
I am applying for Naturalization of my wife, and have a question about English requirement. I have searched the forum, but couldn't find definitive answers to my questions:

My Situation:
PBS calculator recognizes my wife's degree to be equivalent to British Bachelor's degree. However, it doesn't give 10 points for English language. The UKBA website specifies that she can satisfy the English requirements by providing one of the following:

1) a printout from the points-based calculator with the equivalent level of your degree and the level of English

or

2) an original letter or certificate from UK NARIC confirming the equivalent level of your degree, plus an official letter from your university with your name and degree confirming that your degree was taught in English

I have a certificate from the university saying that the degree was taught in English.

My questions are:

1. Can she use PBS printout + certificate from the university to satisfy the English requirement
2. If not, then does she need both comparability and English assessment reports from NARIC.
3. If she goes via test route then does she still need comparability report from NARIC or PBS report is enough?
4. Even though she has a 'medium of instruction' certificate from her university, is it still possible for NARIC to assess that her degree is not Bachelor's equivalent?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Do u have letter/certificate stating that degree is taught in English...??
If you are talking about medium of instruction is mentioned in English..NARIC doesnt consider this to give English lang assesment certificate.. unless you have a written letter stating that her degree is tuaght in english they wont give a ELA certificate..

1)No as I think she is not getting 10 points for English..
2)Yes get both Statement of comparability and ELA or
get statement of comparability and letter from uni that degree is taught in English..

3)If she does this test
B1 CEFR
http://englishexamcentres.co.uk/b1-esol ... vel-3.html
She doesnt need 'comparability report from NARIC' or PBS report

4)can you verify your 4th question again.. ? based on medium of instruction NARIC cannot do bacheor equivalent degree certificate..

Thanks IndiMarshal, for your quick response.

Yes, I have a certificate (Different from degree certificate) from the Indian university stating that her degree was taught in English. Would that certificate along with original degree certificate and NARIC comparability report suffice? Or do I need to get both English equivalent and comparability report from NARIC?

Let me rephrase my 4th question: As her degree is recognized by PBS as Bachelor's equivalent, could NARIC conclude that its not British Bachelor degree equivalent. In addition, even though I provide a certificate stating that the degree was taught in English, would it be possible for NARIC to conclude that the degree is not English equivalent.

thanks.

I have a similar question as vghiya.

I have an UK Naric comparibility letter stating that my Indian degree is equivalent to a master's degree in UK. I have a letter from my University in India stating that "the medium of instruction of the Master's degree, both written and spoken was English".

In my PBS printout, I get 35 points for my Masters degree and the university shows up in the dropdown. I also get 10 points for English language in the PBS.

However when I was filling out the Naturalisation form (june 2014 version), I saw that the UK naric comparibility letter is grouped together with the UK Naric English language assessment. Is this correct? Do I still need to get an ELA done from UK naric?
As per this: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... let-an.pdf (page 15) looks like they don't accept letters from Universities for English knowledge

Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Suhas

Actually these things should be fine with NO approvals from NARIC...

1) Life in UK

2) a: Original degree certificate &
b: Print out from the points-based calculator

As you say u couldnt get 10 points for English language.

Get Statement of Comparability (SoC) from UK NARIC confirming your
qualification is comparable to a UK degree ... You dont need ELA..

So your combination will be

1)LiFe in UK

2) a:Orginal degree certificate &
b: Statement of Comparability (SoC) from UK NARIC confirming your
qualification is comparable to a UK degree, plus an official letter from your
university with your name, the title of the degree, and that the qualification was taught in English.

why not give the NCS a call and if they say this is not fine.. postpone your appointment and write B1 CEFR exam .. acc to my frnd u have to speak about anythihng u want in english for just 2 mins.. thats all..

This links says these are mandatory ..

1) Life in UK
2) a: Statement of Comparability
b:ELA

I suggest you follow Guide AN.. or spare another 60£ for ELA to avoid headache.. (
when I last spoke to head of NCS hampshire.. regarding '''FORM AN & GUIDE AN not being in sync '''
she said.. FORM An needs correction and Guide AN is upto date.. (Such a shame )

Give a call to your Local NCS and check with them.. Make a note of the name of ph advisor whatever suggeston they give and on the day of appointment if the agent differs from phone advisor... tell them... they will atleast postpone your appointment with no extra cost and meanwhile u can get your things correct..

Dear Members,

I have a question and also a situation that worked out earlier

My situation:
1) Eligible for AN application from Tier 2 ICT to ILR + More than a year now
2) Hold a Bachelors degeree from Indian University
3) PBS gives out 10 points for the Degeree
4) Life in UK completed during ILR application

Based on the above I understand the below are required for applicaion
1) Life in UK
2) PBS print out + Degeree Certificate
3) Statement of Comparability and ELA from UK NARIC

However, earlier in March this year I applied ILR for my Wife (PEO Croydon) and just used
1) Life in UK
2) Degeree Certificate + Showing 10 points in PBS for English language requirement. Not even a certificate stating the degree was taught in english as that was included in the wording in degree.

and was approved.

Based on this am I correct in stating the specification for ILR and Naturalisation are different?
OR
It depends on the case worker
OR
Something has changed recently.

I'm planning to use NCS and so will give a check with them over phone. Do enlighten me with your experience or knowledge. Thanks :)

Thanks Indimarshall for your excellent advice,

I've called my local NCS and made a note of the advisor I spoke to. I was advised that I need to provide:
1. PBS printout with points for the qualification
2. UK NARIC comparability letter showing that it was a Master's degree
3. Letter from my University saying that the degree was instructed in English

No ELA is required.

When I enquired about the website not being in sync with the Guide and Application form, she said its managed by the UKBA and its a bit of 'hit and miss' with them. Truly appalling.

Thanks for your help. I'll keep the forum posted on the outcome so other's can benefit.
Regards

Glad it helped you..

been there..so I know how they operate.. I followed Form AN and didnt take my original degree certificate to appointment..bcoz it wasnt mentioned at that time..not sure if it is mentioned now in FORM AN....

I told them 'I am not happy with this service as the documents are not in sync so they postponed it by a week at no extra cost.. If I hadnt spoken enough..they would have cancelled the apointment with no compensation..

Good luck with your appointment..

This is enough if you can satisfy -

1) Life in UK
2) a: Original degree certificate &
b: A print out from the points-based calculator, with the equivalent level of your degree and the level of English

No need of any UK NARIC documents..

Thank you IndiMarshall. As you have pointed earlier I went into the confusion state with a mismatch in Form and Guide wondering which one to follow. Following that my local NCS (Croydon) didn't want to speak anything on phone about the documents and want me to book an appointment.

If you satisfy what I told you .. dont worry.. take a prinout of guide AN and point that information to the agent on the day of appointment and if both parties have a valid point ask them to shift the appointment by 3 to 4 weeks at no extra cost.. and then get your SOC & ELA by post in case you dont have it..
