UK Jobs in Media like Radio, Television, New Media.

Post by johnsyk » Thu Sep 06, 2007 8:39 am

Hi Everyone,

I have currently applied for HSMP approval and intend coming to the UK sometime early next year coz i do understand that nov-dec are low periods when it comes to new recruitment coz of xmas. Im getting 85 points on my HSMP.

Yesterday I spoke to 4 specialist consultants with regard to media jobs in London..either a content or marketing role. Im currently working as a content manager for a radio network in India with 8 years of experience in India, singapore and Dubai. I also have an MBA degree in marketing from Cardiff in Wales.

Most of the job enquiries here on this board are related to IT. My question is..whats the chances for someone with a non-IT background to get a job in London? Are they open to hiring people in Media either in content, business development or Marketing? I do understand that I havent done a marketing job before because my core area has been radio programming but I feel my skills are transferable plus I have a UK Mba degree.

The consulant gave me the usual answer..we will get back to you if we have a role for you. Im very sure that I dont want to chuck my well paying India job and come to the UK without a job. I dont mind spending my own money to fly down for a job interview if I feel its a good break and I could possibly get the job. I did convey this to the consultant as well.

What are my chances?

Myself working in media company and have some knowledge about this media jobs in UK. I am not sure what level of experience you have. But currently media market is good in UK exp for mobile market (lots lots of companies trying to deliver the media content to mobiles -- Smart radio, TV on Mobile etc ). Finding right people is very difficult with right experience exp on Media content side ....But only drawback is companies want some kind of UK experience in this industry...I think you can understand why they are looking some prior UK experience .... Lots lots of telecom companies also entering into this area ...so if you concentrate on telecom as well as media companies ...I think you will have good chance.

Thanks Jaas. Are you on HSMP? How did you get your first break? Any leads? Consultants?

Guys,

Small input on jobs scenario in mobile, infotainment sector. I got placed in a big company in the first interview. Found agencycentral.co.uk very useful in my job search. Had been 3 weeks here.

So, go ahead and apply. Consultants did ask me whether I had prior UK exp. But dont worry. If you have good experience, lack of UK exp is still copable issue to deal with. This argument is mainly used by the consultants to grab some money in the initial deal or something. Dont get broken by this argument. If the consultant asks you to agree(in writing) to a certain lower hourly/annual rate, dont do that. Say you are open to discuss them as and when an opportunity materializes into a job offer.

Regards,
Sai
