Just made a new FOI request to the Home Office. Most likely they will be answering already after 6th April. Anyone want to bet on what the total number is actually going to be? Maybe we can get the winner a cake or something.

Dear Home Office,
Please provide the current (as of the date of your response or any
date between now and then) number of people remaining in the UK
with leave to remain as Tier 1 (general) migrants.
I am asking only about principal migrants, not including any
dependants.
The number should be easy to provide -- since the category closed
for new applications in April 2011, the only people now remaining
in it are those who have already extended their stay in the UK at
least once.
The answer to my question will therefore be equal to the number of
people to whom Biometric Residence Permits have been issued in the
UK in Tier 1 (general) category, that are currently still valid. (I
am NOT asking for people whose expired leave may have been extended
by section 3c or 3d)
As BRPs are all located in one database it should be possible to
answer by question with a single query.
I would ALSO like to have the breakdown of this number of people by
country of nationality (also a parameter included in their BRP
cards).
Thank you!
Yours faithfully,
Olga V. Childs, immigration advisor
