What did you use for entry clearance?

what did you use as proof for entry clearance for:

savings (how much? is it a problem if you make recent, large deposits?)
accomodation (my boyfriend is going there first and will be put up in corporate housing for a month,. then he will be finding us a place to live and i will be meeting him out there)

what else is involved? what was your experience like?
