Is it that easy to migrate to Canada?

Post by hanna » Thu Oct 11, 2007 12:28 pm

Hi all,
I was wondering if someone is in simular situation as me.My husband is on student visa and we have lived in UK for the last 7 years.I think there is more possibility for us to get a visa to Canada rather then wait for ILR in UK .That is why we are thinking of migration to Canada now.We are from Russia,I have Russian degree in economics and my husband has a batchelor degree in BBA which he got in UK last year.Unfortunatelly we dont speak French. How long does it take to get a permission to migrate to Canada and how big is a chance to get it at all?Where do we start?Do we have to apply online or is it better to get a solicitor to do it for you?
I would appriciate your advise.

Start by reading about it? Go to the Canadian government immigration website...you'll find that it isn't as easy as you think. It's a pretty long process and might take anything from 7 months to 3 years...read other people's posts to see how long it took for them.

As for ILR in the UK - in what capacities have you been in the UK? When would you qualify for ILR?

Hi,Sakura,
We would apply for ILR on the basis of 10 years lawful. But we have to wait 3 more years and who knows what is going to happen in 3 years time.Just a couple of years ago it was 7 years lawful and you could apply for ILR,now it is 10.So I think it is worth trying Canada.

I've been in UK for almost 10 years and have never heard about 7 years for ILR, when did they change that to 10 years?

It's been the 10 year rule for a long time now, I'm pretty sure.
I am not, and cannot, offer legal advice to particular people. I can only discuss general areas of immigration law.

People should always consider obtaining professional advice about their own particular circumstances.
