Hi, I am an Australian currently living in the US. I just renewed my Australian Passport and now I also need the UK "right to abode certificate" which was in my expired Australian passport transferred to my new passport.
Can someone explain what I need to do to get the Right to abode certificate placed in my new Australian pass port.
Do I have to fill out some forms online then post my passport to the British consulate in California ? or something like that ?
Any advice will be much appreciate.
Thank you.

Vinny, that link relates more to Visas, I don't think my "Right To Abode" certificate is the same as a visa. (I could be wrong)

Well, a RoA certificate is a "visa" in the sense that it its an endorsement in a non-UK passport which defines the conditions under which the holder may enter the UK - RoA indicates that there are effectively no conditions.
See this info, and apply accordingly:-

If your claim to ROA is through a UK-born mother, have you considered registration as a British citizen by descent on this basis?

I would love to get a British passport but I thought I could only have the certificate to the right to abode RoA in my Australian passport.
Main reason was because my mother is the one who was born in Australia not my farther. If my father was born in the UK then I could apply for a British passport. Am I mistaken ?

Laws changed back in 2003 ... if you were born prior to 1983 to a British born mother you are probably eligible to register as a British citizen.

Hi I have read through the above thread as my Mum is having a similar problem but I am still a little unclear on how to proceed and where we stand. If someone could give me some information I would really appreciate it.
Basically my Mum is Canadian and has lived in the UK since 1970. She paid the initial fee to have the Right of Abode put onto her Canadian passport some years ago. Each time she has renewed her passport she has just sent it off with her old 1 and had the roa transferred onto the new passport. We have been trying to do this again but as stated above this appears to have changed. Does she have to now pay the £223 fee each time she renews? All I can find are forms to apply for the right of abode certificate and it states all fees must be paid but it mentions nothing regarding existing certificates on expired passports. Very confusing. Thanks

Unfortunately, everything has changed. They currently treat all renewals of
CoE-RoA as fresh
applications, subject to relevant
additional documents and expensive fees.
