JSA and Naturaliazation

Post by Ellen357 » Sat Sep 12, 2015 9:48 am

Hello,

I have Permanent Residence card and lately I was given a notice after working as a freelance teacher for a year, meaning that next week I am unemployed.

I am thinking to apply for British citizenship or naturalization in two months, will it make my situation bad if I apply for JSA now ?

I am originally Russian, have been living in the UK for 12 years and was married to EU citizen before.

I am also thinking of studying full time, and getting a loan for Student Finance - will that affect my naturalization ?

Thank you so much for your help.

Ellen

No effect on your application. As you have permanent residence, you can claim JSA. Employment is also not a mandatory requirement for citizenship.

Once you have settled status all you have to do is meet the published requirements for naturalisation.
What you now do in UK is immaterial as long as it's within the law & does not count against your 'good character'.

In relation to citizenship, being a student doesn't count for or against you either.
As you have settled status you should be treated as a Home student (for student finance: fees/loans) whether or not your take the next step to naturalisation.

Good luck.
