Irish girl married to a US guy - need help!

I'm an Irish citizen (born and bred) living in the states (currently have green card, starting dual citz. process soon).

My husband is a US citizen. We're hoping to move back to Ireland at the end of next year...

I've been reading a LOt - but am confuuusssed! I called the consulate help line - they said get EU spouse permit - the girl physically AT the consulate said not to, just to get his passport stamped at the airport...

Can someone please clarify what's simplist? and quickest - we can't afford for him to not work for very long..

Just arrive in Ireland with your marriage cert etc, and apply for the stamp4 for your husband at the Garda Immigration for him to be able to work and live beyond the 3 month visa waiver period.

You are an Irish citizen and want to return to Ireland with your US husband.

I am not sure why the consulate recomended an EU spouse permit. That is normally only for spouses of citizens of OTHER (non-irish) EU member states. It normally can only be used by Irish citizens if they have been resident in another EU member state before returning to Ireland.

I am also surprised that you can just return to Ireland with your husband. You could not do that if you were in a similar situation moving to the UK or US, though Canada has something similar. (But domestic Irish law is not something I know about.)

I've yet to hear of an instance where an Irish consulate abroad gave out correct advice lol.

Strange, but true. If the non-Irish spouse is from a visa-waiver country you enter on the visa waiver and then apply to remain once in Ireland. You can't apply for a spouse visa abroad. Personally I like the way the UK and others do it; you know you will be granted leave BEFORE you pack up and move halfway around the world.

To add a post script, with the way the Irish operate even if you are granted a 'spouse visa' from abroad to join your E.U spouse, there's no guarantee you can live in Ireland if you haven't lived in another E.U country before. Too much craic/crack going on here if you ask me!

Not a problem where the sponsor is an Irish citizen.
