Re-registering with GNIB if leaving Ireland a month later?

Post by neuron » Mon Dec 07, 2015 3:19 pm

My GNIB Stamp 1 expires on January 23rd.

I've put a notice in with my current employer, and will be working there until February 24th. My intention is to leave Ireland a few days later.

Do I really need to re-register with the GNIB for just one month? Are there any checks at airports when I'm leaving Ireland at the end of February?

Thanks!

It would be better if you register before you leave and sometimes you will find hard to get back to the state in future.

That makes sense, thanks!

I assume the company will give me a letter (if they do, at all) that states I'm finishing up my employment on February 24th.

Is it reasonable to assume that the GNIB will register me only for until that time, or will they give me a little while longer? (Just need to know this around packing up, buying plane tickets, etc.)

Thanks!

Are you on a work permit or equivalent? When does it expire?

If your work permit expires then your employer should not allow you to come in to work until they at least apply to renew it and you get a stamp on that basis. I don't think an employer would be as worried about registration lapsing though. Employees get that wrong all the time.

And if you're not planning to travel in that month tell them that. I've had multiple officers offer to just give me a stamp and no card and save me €300. They only charge that if you get a card, not just a stamp. This was when they were giving me temporary 90-day stamps while waiting for a work permit which maybe isn't the same.
