Question about marrying in Ireland

Post by sphealie » Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:06 am

Hi all, still quite new to this site, so please be gentle C: I also apparently posted this in the wrong forum origihnally, so not only am I new here, I also suck. Anyway, onto the thread.

My fiance and I have finally decided to take the plunge and do the SS route in Ireland. I am in the UK currently on a tourist visa, and will be here until April 19th. We wanted to be married before leaving to Ireland, but we've been told by a lot of people that it's pretty much impossible for us to get married in the UK as I'm only on a tourist visa.

So, we can just get married in Ireland, right? But I've read that you need to first notify a registrar of your marriage, and then you must wait three months before you can marry. However, as a US citizen, I'm only allowed to stay in Ireland for three months... so if I need to wait three months before we can marry, but I'm only allowed to be in Ireland for three months, then how can we get married?

Once we notify a registrar and get all that started, is there some way I can send somebody proof that we're getting married, and I'll be allowed to stay and get married?

Alternately, is there any other way I could be allowed to stay in Ireland long enough for us to comfortably get married without worrying about my impending visa end date?

I've read on another site just now that I can apply for permission to remain longer in Ireland once I arrive, but I've only found one site saying that and I'm paranoid and want to hear what you guys say about it.

Thanks for reading, I hope some of you can offer me some advice! xx

And just to mention, we don't want to get married in the US because the plane tickets are super expensive and we'd prefer to save our money for moving to Ireland xx

Hello sphealia, if you two been living together for 2 years you can apply for visa in ireland without getting married and once you got the visa and done surinder singe back to uk, get married there hassle free.
Its almost impossible to get married these days because of new interview rules and baclogs of marriages since September 2015.
I know some people have crossed the 3 months waiting time but regisrar says they have to wait until backlog is clear and then they will be called for interview and if regisrar is satisfied with all documents he will allow couples to marry.
I guess the option on top is best, gether your 2 years proof (providing you are in long term relationship and been living together) and simply make your application for EU1.
Hope it helps

Ooh, this does help, thank you! What visa specifically do we need to apply for to get to Ireland and how do I go about it? And what shall I do to prove 2 years of relationship? (not that that'll be hard, we've been together 3 1/2!)

Sorry for the probably-dense questions, I'm just super nervous and afraid to think that anything might work out for once! xx

Oh sorry, I see I missed the part where you said "Apply for EU1" =P Is this something I do before our trip to Ireland while I'm here in the UK, or do we do it once we get there? xx

Hi, do you have any bills, joint bank account or lease agreement at same address for past 2 years, if yes then you can make the applications while in uk anytime, any local lawyer can do that for you.
EU1 is application form name, you have to fill up to make the application.
