Eligible for British citizenship?

Post by abricomo » Mon Jan 18, 2016 9:09 pm

Hi,

I'm unable to determine whether or not I am eligible to register as a British citizen. I've looked for information on various websites but I got confused very quickly so I thought I might just ask here. Let me explain.

I am 20 years old and a French citizen. I was born in France from a French mother. My father, however, was born in the UK in 1963 and then moved to France, therefore he has the dual nationality French and British (2 passports). I've read it's also important to mention that my parents were married at the time of my birth.

Where does that leave me?

Thanks a lot.

You are British by decent then and can apply directly for a British passport as your parents were married at the time of your birth and your father was British born.

You need your full birth certificate listing your parents and your fathers birth certificate and passport.

Be aware that if you have any children outside the UK, they will not be British.

Is the marriage certificate required too? As a proof that my parents were indeed married at that time? Also my dad's British passport is expired, is that an issue? Thanks a lot.

Yes, I've read that up online somewhere, thanks! :-)

I think marriage cert might be required, but I stand corrected.

Expired passport for your father is fine.
