CSI Requirement

Hello all,

I am applying for PR and have a question about the CSI requirement which I was wondering if anyone could help me with.

I am a German and Brazilian national and have been studying uninterrupted in the UK since 2010. I have never obtained any official residency documents before deciding to apply for PR. I was not aware of this CSI requirement, and never needed such a thing as I have always had private health insurance from Brazil (which I have gone back to frequently throughout the years so never really needed medical care in the UK).

I was wondering if I could apply with a statement from the private health insurance providers in Brazil stating that I was covered for the period during which I have been living in the UK? - The thing is, the insurance does not cover me in the UK (other than providing refunds on return) so I am not sure it would qualify.

Do I have a chance?

You can try but I don't think you are very likely to succeed as the health insurance needs to be comprehensive (i.e. cover you for the majority of circumstance were you to fall ill whilst in the UK).

Little chance if policy does not cover UK &, if that's the case, unclear how provider could provide such a statement.

I was wondering then, whether this CSI requirement would still apply for this period should I start working? I will begin to work in August. Would I then be able to apply for PR normally or would I have to prove that I has CSI for the period in which I was a student?

You don't need CSI if you are working and paying NI contributions. But if you plan to use any of your time as a student as your PR qualifying period then you must show you had CSI during that period or it will not count.

If it's a policy that doesn't cover UK (as I understood you to say) then I can't see how you get a statement saying that it does cover UK.

Also cash-back type schemes don't appear to be acceptable.
