Passport or ROA

Post by asrao » Wed Jan 27, 2016 12:26 am

Hi

I need advice. I and my wife are both British Citizens. I got my citizenship in 2010, my wife got her naturalisation done couple of weeks back and now she holds British passport, same with my 2 year old son.

My wife is pregnant and she is planning to give birth in India. My work involves travel and so we decided it would be better for her to go to her parents who can look after her and my son.

Now coming to point, what is the quickest way to bring a baby born overseas?. I have read on other threads on this forum that it can take up-to 6 months for processing passport application from India. Someone suggested ROA?, how does that work?, is that any quicker or relevant to my situation?.

Any help or advice offered much appreciated.

Regards

A CoE-RoA on an Indian passport is possible only if the child is born to one British parent (thus getting British citizenship) and one Indian parent in India (thus getting Indian citizenship). The child would thus have dual citizenship either until the age of 18 or until the child is issued a British passport, whichever is first.

In your case, since both parents are British citizens, the child is not eligible for an Indian passport and hence can not be issued a CoE-RoA, which requires one to have a non-UK passport for it to be stamped on.

Current timelines on these forums suggest a timeframe of between 6 months and a year for British passports being issued abroad.

The quickest way is for the birth to take place in the UK, get a British passport in the UK and then travel abroad.
