Baby born in Thailand to British Father

Hi There

I am a British citizen (Born and raised in the UK), my Thai wife has just given birth to our son in Thailand, it is now essential for me to get a passport for my baby which will then allow me to apply to ge both my child and wife the permission to come and live with me in the UK.

It seems like a pretty daunting process and I am sure that the application needs to be perfect and even then I can see it being a pretty protracted process, I would be very grateful if there is any advice anyone can offer as to where to start, I am specifically hoping to find out if there is any benefit at this stage in registering the birth in the UK as this would seem to add some time to the process, will this help me in applying for the passport, secondly it would be helpful to know the starting point for the passport application, is there a specific section to apply for passports for babies born abroad or would I just apply under "Getting a childs passport"

I have just got back from Thailand after the birth, while there we got all of the Thia documents translated and stamped by the consulate in Bangkok so I should have all of the paperwork that I need, I could really just use any advice as I am very keen on making sure that the application does not get rejected through me doing something wrong.

It would be much eaiser if you would have applied for child's British passport in British Embassy/HC there in Bangkok. I am not sure if you can apply for child't passport in UK and carry it or post it back to Thailand. I'd suggest checking with officials in UK as well as British Embassy in Bangkok.

Passport applications have almost nothing to do with the Embassy or Consulate. (There are suggestions that the Consulate actually straightened out the passport operation of VFS at Bangkok.) Applications forms from Thailand are submitted at the 'Trendy Office Building' and are forwarded by VFS, and are collected from VFS there when issued. There have been issues with attempting to get a passport from the UK - I'd suggest looking on one of the specialist web sites for experiences.

There is absolutely no benefit at this stage. It has been reported that consular birth certificates (at least, recent ones) are not being accepted by HMPO. The only advantage I've found is that they are supposed to be acceptable for getting jobs or rented accommodation in the UK, but this would only matter if your son could not obtain a convincing British passport. His first passport won't be convincing when he's 25 years old!
