uk spouse visa passport submission

I will be applying for my wife spouse visa, in the list of documentary evidence to send it says that you should included the original passport and that "We will not issue a visa if you do not have a valid passport or travel document to put the visa in. You should ensure that your passport has at least one blank
page which is free from endorsements on both sides".

the thing is my wife is an air hostess and requires her passport for travel almost daily for work. With the UKBA having notoriously slow turnaround times , what am we supposed to do ? is it not possible to send certified copies of our passports? obviously when they make a decision we can send the originals in for attaching the visa.

Where or which country are you applying in?

I am not sure certified copies will be accepted.
