NTL application with expired passport

Hi. My husband is applying for NTL. He does not have a current passport as it is taking a while to renew it. Can we send his expired passport with his ILR stamped on it. He is applying for a new job and they are looking for a BRP hence the NTL application. I read online with UKVI that NTL is for confirmation of ILR from expired passport and lost passport. Im just wondering if anybody here has gone through with this application without using a current passport and just submitted the expired passport with an ILR stamp. I wouls really appreciate any advise /help. Thanks.
