name change prior the ceremony

Post by mejzy » Mon Sep 19, 2016 4:28 pm

Hi there,

I have received a letter from HO confirming successful application for naturalisation and waiting for the other document to arrive for booking the ceremony.

There is written on the first letter I have just received I can not apply for british passport under my married name (which I used for the naturalisation application) as my old passport of my origin country is still on my maiden name.

My fault, I was not aware of that before the application process. My question is, when booking the ceremony, can they write down on the certificate my maiden name even that I applied under my married name? Obviously my maiden name is on my old passport which I can show them at the ceremony but on my letter from HO is already my married name.

Just asking as this process would save lots of problems as my ambassy in UK does not provide new passports here, they can only give me one way ticket back home, where I must stay for 4 months to apply for a new passport under my married name. That is my origin country law, no other way how to sort it out and obviously it means for me far too much time to spend abroad I can not efford as I could lose my job here in UK.

Anyone here tried to change name on the ceremony certificate and was successful??

Thank you kindly for your replies.

Hi noajthan,

I already have contacted the passport office due to this issue, was on the line for good 40 minutes discussing all possible options and was told at the end they will give me passport only: if the certificate is on my old name or if my old passport is renewed to my new married name.

So after that I have called my ambassy and was told what I already wrote. My old passport is not valid for over 2 years but this fact is not relevant for the office here as they said I will have dual citizenship and due to that I must get the origin country passport first, they will not provide British on married name first, it must be the origin country.

Thank you for your time to send me these links, however there is only one way out, to go home, unless I can change my name on the certificate prior the ceremony. So I just want to find out what chance I have to get the cerificate name changed.

No, you cannot change or amend the certificate at your ceremony. The certificates are printed by HO, they are not handwritten.

I would be very surprised if your certificate is in your married name though.
