Options for staying longer in Slovenia

Post by Nostalgia » Thu Sep 22, 2016 2:04 pm

Hello all, I am a British citizen with a partner who lives in Slovenia.

From what I am told from the police here, I can only stay a maximum of 3 months in a 6 month period - and if I stay 3 months in a 6 month period then for the next 6 months I cannot return to Slovenia. There is also the rule of always having to register with the police when I come here as a tourist, and I just get the vibe it's tough to stay here as a foreigner. I am interested in any options that can enable me to stay longer in this country. I've read a bit about temporary resident permits which could then open the gateway to possible permanent resident permits.

There's also work/study permits, but with me knowing very little of the language this is not a option really right now.

Is there anywhere good in Slovenia I could go for advice on this matter (as I am in Slovenia currently) and also would it be worth contacting directly the British or Slovenian embassy's or writing to them?

As a eu citizen you have the right of free movement.
Which preconditions have to be fulfilled for a stay longer than 3 month you can download here:

That document is about Slovakia, not Slovenia. It also contains little information.

However one thing caught my eye, this section:

''document which confirms that he/she has a permanent, duly certified relationship with the EU citizen (e.g. registered partner)''

My relationship with my Slovenian partner is 18 months long now, it is a serious relationship of which I have made several trips here and we see a future together, but marriage is not a option right now. It would be great if my long term commitment to this relationship could result in being able to stay in this country for a longer period, but I really need to find out more information.

Are there any Slovenians on this board who could help? Probably highly unlikely but still..

You don't need Slovenians, treaty rights apply across EU.
And a Union citizen can't usually sponsor anyone in their home state.

Just become a qualified person.
Viva free movement.
All that is gold does not glitter; Not all those who wander are lost. E&OE.
