Son born abroad to foreign spouse

Post by Jon.Mason » Mon Oct 03, 2016 1:58 pm

Hi everyone.

My wife is a Moroccan national who has never set foot in the UK as of yet.

She is pregnant and about to give birth in Morocco.

Will the child automatically have British citizenship and how do I apply for a passport? What documents are needed and what is the process and cost?

If anyone is able to walk me through this process it would be much appreciated.

Very confused if I need to apply for nationality for my son or not. I will be applying later on for my wife once we have everything organised in the UK.

Many thanks for your help

I should add that I am British by other than Descent.

If my child automatically has British citizenship, do I need to inform the authorities of the Birth and how can I apply for a passport etc? Anything else I need to do or fill in etc?

As your child will be automatically British from birth you can apply directly for their British passport.

"2. British citizenship by descent
British citizenship may descend to one generation born abroad. So a child born
abroad to a parent who is British otherwise than by descent will automatically be
British by descent."

Ok, that is good news. So my child is automatically a british citizen. I was worried thinking I would need to pay a lot of money for an application. So what are the costs and what is the process for the passport? Is it the same as any normal passport application?

"Cost
It costs £46 to get a child passport online or by post, or £55.75 using the Post Office Passport Check and Send service."

ok, but which documents would I need?

Presumably its not as simple and easy as applying for a passport from within the UK,

I am guessing birth cert plus translation, plus marriage cert etc?

Have you read through the link? This states the documents required.
