Born in USA 1970, to British Mum, lived in UK since 1970

Post by mumof2sherbets » Fri Dec 02, 2016 4:42 pm

Hi all

I was born in March 1970, in USA to my Mum who was British and my Dad who is American, they were married. But Mum left him and around about August 1970 she flew back to UK with me as a 6 month old.

We never had holidays abroad as kids, but when i needed a passport for a school trip she took me to London and I was given an American passport , same day from the Embassy there, year 1985. However, I have the given leave to enter the united kingdom for an indefinite period stamp, in all my passports since then. To be honest I find it a right pain. As for as I'm concerned I am more British than American. I am right to think as i found this online I can actually just apply for a British passport directly or do I have to do anything else and if so what and the costs ?

This is what i found online

''Many British women resident overseas were unaware of the announcement in 1979 and missed the opportunity to apply for citizenship on behalf of their minor children. Consequently, an amendment to the British Nationality Act 1981 has now been put into effect allowing all persons who would have been under 18 on the date of the announcement (07 February 1979) to register now. All those born overseas to a British mother between 7 February 1961 and 31 December 1982 are now eligible to register as British citizens retroactively."

I don't think my Mum know for this back in 1979 and nothing was mentioned in 1985 at the USA embassy that would of made her think I could of both or I'm sure she'd of done it.

My mum was British ( passed away 20 years ago)
My mum's Mum was British ( passed away 15 years ago)
My mum's dad was British ( he passed away 33 years ago)

So this could mean I am British by decent ?

I don't know what to do or how to go about getting a British passport. But know it'd make things alot easier for me.

Regards

You are not British but you have an entitlement to register as a British citizen by descent.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... n-form-ukm

It costs £80 and the entitlement is life long.
