Travelling to the US on a PR Card..or not...

Post by tm13 » Sun Feb 03, 2008 6:09 pm

Hi there,

New to the forums and personally a Canadian citizen, but I have friend here who is going through the application process and have a couple of questions.

I read that once you recieve your Permenant Residence card, there is a 6 month wait until you can travel from Canada. Is this still true?

Also, if he leaves Canada without his application finished and done (he's currently illegal because he's been here so long, but being sponsored by a company and this are already in motion), what will happen if he tries to cross the border into the US? Will they not let him through? Not let him back? Or something worse?

I'm asking because him and another friend are planning a trip to the US, but I'm worried that something is going to go wrong, because I do not believe he'll have his PR card yet. And if he does, if he'll still be under restrictions.

UK. I believe he still has his UK passport with him as well...this would be his only identification to cross the border.

If he is illegal in Canada then he should not even think about leaving before his case to become a permanent resident is finalised (assuming that is possible) as the Canadians might not re-admit him.

Thanks, I will let him know. Hopefully this statement from another will help him change his mind, as he doesn't seem to believe me when I tell his as such.
