register a child as british citizen

Post by zangao » Sat Dec 17, 2016 8:34 am

HELLO ALL, I WAS BORN IN ANGOLA., I CAME TO THE UK IN 19198, I HAVE BEEN NATURALISED IN 2006 AND BECAME BRITISH CITIZEN. SO WHEN I LEFT ANGOLA IN DECEMBER, I LEFT A WOMAN PREGANT BUT I DIDNT KNOW. MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN IN SEPTEMBER 1999. SO WHEN I GAIN CONTACT WITH THE MORTHER OF MY DAUGHTER, SHE TOLD ME THAT I LEFT HER PREGNAT AND THAT WE HAVE A CHILD. CAN I REGISTER HER AS BRITISH CITIZEN AND ASK HER TO COME JOIN ME TO LIVE WITH ME HERE IN UK? IS SHE WOULD BE ENTITLED TO GAIN NATIONALITY BY ME? SHE IS NOW 17 YEAR OLD. PLEASE HELP WHAT SHOULD I DO.?

Welcome to the forum. You don't need to post in capitals.

Firstly, even if the mother has named you as the father on the birth certificate, following changes under British nationality law this will no longer be sufficient to prove paternity.

A DNA test will be required to prove that you are the child's father.

I'll let others better placed to advise further on the process for registration.

Leaving question of paternity aside for others.
A foreign-born child born before you became British is not British.

To become a citizen, registration as a minor, or naturalisation, as an adult, is required.
This depends on having settled status (ILR) in UK,

A visa is required to enter UK.
Child will not be able to enter UK and reside in UK without the mother unless you have sole care, custody and responsibility for daughter.

ILR is required before any ambitions for citizenship can be considered; it takes 5 years (minimum) to get ILR.
As child is 17 she has no time to settle in UK before becoming an adult.

To come to UK as an adult, the child would have to come in her own right on a UK domestic visa: for example Tier 1, 2, 4 or spousal visa.
All that is gold does not glitter; Not all those who wander are lost. E&OE.
