Job applications, right to work

Post by AntonioS » Sat Dec 31, 2016 11:27 am

Hi all,

I've recently been applying for engineering jobs in the UK (ultimately hoping for sponsorship), however every time I'm faced with the question of elibility to work in the UK, I'm never sure what to put.

Currently, I have no British passport, and I hold no work visa, however I know that should I apply for a Tier 5 visa that I'd be successful, i.e. I'd be eligible to work in the UK for 2 years. So should I say, "Yes, I am eligible to work in the UK", given that I am eligible for (and pretty much guaranteed) a Tier 5 visa, or should I say "No, I'm not eligible to work in the UK" as I have yet to apply for the Tier 5 visa?

Thanks in advance,
Anthony

You are not eligible to work in the UK until you physically hold a visa that allows you to work. You could state that you will be applying for XY visa, but unlikely you will be successful without proof of right to work.

A visa is also never 'guaranteed'.

And you face competition from whole of Europe (no visas).

Thanks CR001, unfortunately the application forms are simply a "yes or no" option, with no section for comments. I guess the safe option would be to select that I am not eligible, and send a clarification email to the recruitment team.

With regard to a visa never being guaranteed, perhaps it was a poor choice of words, however I do understand that. It was simply to illustrate my personal levels of confidence in that my application would be successful. I very comfortably meet all of the criteria, and was previously approved to study in 2015 on a Tier 4 student visa.

Thanks again,
Anthony

That is unfortunately a very big concern of mine. I have to be able to demonstate that I am worthy of employment (and thus sponsorship) over those that do not require sponsorship. I'm desperately hoping that my academic performance and work experience is enough.

Tier 5 YMS does not require you to be Sponsored by a company or any other type of business or organisation.
Apply for the visa, get to the UK, get a job. There is work for everyone that wants to work. Minimum wage roles are ten a penny.
And if you can then look for the job you want.
Like everything in life there are no guarantees.
