Do I really need an appointment for Premium services?

Dear all,

Just out of curiosity. I went to HO (Croydon) to extend my student visa today, because my interview is booked at 9am, so I went there at 8:15am. When I was there, I saw 4-5 people queuing just outside the security check point. So I queued as well. Not long later, a security asked me that do I have an appointment, I said I do, then he let me jump the queue straight to the security check point.

So I guess, those people were there without appointment. Are they waiting for people with appointment drop out or HO will deal with them anyway if they are not too busy?

Yeah, you probably right. Anyhow, is that possible to be interviewed without an appointment?

I went to Croydon recently and saw a couple at the door speaking with the security guard. They claimed to not have known that appointments were now needed. The security guard was at pains to explain to them that they would just be wasting their time by waiting as even if he were to allow them in without an appointment they would be turned away by the people who do the initial checks of the documents.
