Yes, you will need a new CoS to apply for an extension. You cannot use the one that you used before.- Will my employer need a new COS?
Depends how long you have been in the UK on a Tier 2 General visa.- What is the default extension for this type of visa - 2 or 3 years?
Yes, you will need to prove maintenance.- Will I need to show my bank statements?
You will not be required to prove maintenance as this will be extension application. See point 167 of Policy Guidance. Will I need to show my bank statements?
You can apply for extension any time but your total duration of stay cannot be more than 6 years in Tier 2.How soon should I apply for visa extension?

Yes, they are exemptthe employer will need a new CoS, and they are exempt from doing a resident labour market test.
Yes, the maximum you can stay in Tier 2 is till Sep 2020. Make sure your cos is not issued for duration more than three years otherwise you will need to pay very high visa fees.I have been on this Tier 2General Migrant visa since Sept 2014. So, does that mean the default extension is for three years?
Your dependants are not required to prove maintenance as well.To apply extension for my dependants, will I need to show funds for maintenance? Or are they visa’s extended based on mine?
