Jobseekers allowance for longer than 6months

Post by Twinsky » Tue Mar 21, 2017 3:59 pm

Hi all,

Hopefully somebody can enlighten me regarding to how claiming jsa can effect Permanent Residency or settled status. I am thinking to apply for a British passport for my son who was born in 2011, the only problem is we were receiving jsa for 10months in 2009. My husband did get his SIA licence and driving licence during that period and got a job as a security guard. I am aware that the law changed in 2014 and in most cases 6months is the max you can claim jsa without effecting your PR application. I also read somewhere if you can prove that you was genuinely looking for work it will count towards the 5year.
Does the law change effect us even though we claimed in 2009?
Is it proof enough(for being genuinely a jobseeker) that my husband got a job after he finished his courses?
We are both from an A8 country.

Thank you for any advice.

It shouldn't affect it. They are looking for continuous economic activity. Being on jobseekers IS an economic activity and counts towards the 5 years.

Surely that would only come into play if they had NOT found work after the period of unemployment
