What do you mean UKBA (who don't exist anymore) won't allow you to extend?? Of course you can extend, you will likely just face a shortfall for ILR.

The earliest you can apply is 28 days before your current permission (called ‘leave to remain’) expires.
About the shortfall, my wife initially got 2 years and 9 months, and gov.uk website says you'll get 2.5 years, so if we apply shortly and get 2.5 years (say from 1st Oct) we'll end up with just over the 5 years required for ILR next time?
