Is IELTS Academic test result adequate for Spouse visa?

Post by dannyboy1 » Sun May 21, 2017 10:39 am

Hello Guys! My daughter in law is applying for UK Spouse Settlement Visa. She has passed IELTS Academic exam with 6.5 overall (B2). She is doing house job at present after MBBS (Doctor) degree. Can anyone tell me please if that IELTS Academic result would be acceptable for Spouse Visa Purposes ? Thx

Hi Dannyboy,

B2 is fine for spouse Visa. Minimum requirment is A1 for first settlement Visa. Must be from an approved test centre in the country of application. Gov.uk website provides a list of approved centres by jurisdiction.

Good luck
Simon

You should check on the HO list that whether the required type of test has been passed at approved centre. Higher level of English test or higher score in test does not necessarily accepts by HO. Many members have to redo the correct type of test.
The opinion expressed as above is neither a professional advice nor contesting/competing to other member's opinion/advice.

The test is only fine if it "IELTS for UKVI" Academic. Not if it is just IELS Academic. The testing and criteria etc and fees are exactly the same. However IELTS for UKVI is only undertaken in approved centres (which also take the normal version) and for IELTS for UKVI UKVI can verify the results online. The test report clearly shows a UKVI number so you will know if that's the case or from looking at the original booking.

Just read on the IELTS website the following which further clarifies the question asked.
"IELTS tests for UK Visas and Immigration
IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training and IELTS Life Skills are accepted by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) as proof of English proficiency for those wishing to live, work and study in the UK."
Any comments?

Hi Dannyboy,

here is the link you need

https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... uage-tests

Go to the page and open the pdf file. Find the test centre and the accepted qualification and grade. If your daughters' matches or is higher in the same category it is fine.

Best
Simon
I'm not an expert and only answer from my personal experience and understanding of the rules. Spouse Settlement Visa Granted for my wife July 2017. You should not take my advice as absolute.

Thx Simon!
I am somewhat confused. I have seen the "IELTS Test Report form". It says "Academic" with approved centre (number not mentioned for obvious reasons) in Lahore. Also on the form is UKVI number (again withheld). Although this test was taken primarily to kill two birds with one stone. i.e To satisfy the Criteria to sit for GMC adminstered PLAB exam (my daughter-in-Law has qualified as a medical graduate) and to satisfy "Knowledge of English" requirement for her settlement Visa if appropriate. She achieved CEFR level "B" with overall band Score of 6.5 in this test.
Now if this is the wrong IELTS version shall I ask her for a re-test?. Any thoughts?

Just one question here for the informed ones. The requirement for Spouse settlement visa as far as IELTS results are concerned is CEFR level A. If someone sat for a much higher level like B1 or B2 with the intention of further studied in mind, would their achieved B1 or B2 grades in IELT Academic test (from a UKVI rapproved Centre) be sufficient enough to satisfy the Knowledge of English Criterion.?

Yes, provided the test given is IELTS for UKVI.

IELTS for UKVI approved centres also conduct normal IELTS tests, so need to make the correct booking when paying the fees and the test result will have a UKVI number.

The tests are exactly the same, its just some admin (biometric security etc) that are different.
