Self assessment & Vat

Hello Everyone,
A friend of mine has a NCS appointment this week. He is registered for self assessment and he works in a company (PAYE). He has filed taxes for 2015-16. But hasn't filed for 2016-17 yet. Is it advisable to file self assessment taxes before he goes for the appt date or it's fine as he has time to do so ?
