help - Problems returning to the UK

Hi

Help please. My father has lived in the UK since the 60's and has not taken up british citizenship and has previously travelled to Canada and Australia without any issues. Recently he went to Canada however on his return the airline stopped him from flying has they said the passport does not show he lives in the UK and can return. After a couple of days and speaking to different people he was allowed to return to the UK. He was advised that he would need some kind of card to show he lives in the UK. Can you please tell me what I need to do so he doesn't have this issue again when flying?

What did the UK Immigration Officer endorse on his passport when he entered to the UK?

When he came back from his holiday the stamp reads

'ILR VPP - immigration officer 2499'

I tried to upload a picture but I couldn't do that.

My father is looking to go to Australia next year and is worried he will have the same problem.
