Keeping Canadian PR status

Hi,

I landed in September 2007, stayed 1 month in Canada and left afterwards to settle some business in Europe. Now I have been accepted to a PhD program that would last 4 years in Spain...Is there any way to keep my PR card while i do my PhD in Spain?

I understand that following the law, I have to come back to Canada to keep my PR card no later than October 1st, 2010?
