Long term visit visa for spouse

I am currently on my Tier 2 employer-sponsored work permit valid for the next 2 years. I would like to know if it's recommended to apply for long-term visit visa (2 years) for my husband who works in Canada (PR but Indian citizen). He has never applied for a UK visa before, therefore I am unsure if it's best to apply for >6 months visit visa or long-term visa would be okay?

Also, what are the additional documents required to be submitted for the long-term visa?

You'll never get a long term visa first go. Need to establish a pattern of obeying by the visa rules frist, say after 2/3 6 month ones, each visit a few weeks max.

Unlikely he will get a long term visit visa if he has no visit history to the UK.

How long is he planning on 'visiting'?

He has to prove he is a genuine visitor and will leave the UK (usually difficult with a spouse in the UK) and would have to submit substantial evidence of his family, social and financial ties to Canada.
