Will the officer return the passport of the country of origin after the passport appointment?

They will make a photocopy and give the original back to you but you might have to provide the proof that you need it. like Travel itinerary etc. hope it helps.

Now a days they start sendin back the passport with in 2 weeks but on the website (6 weeks)
