when do I get Biometrics, conflicting advice

Post by happyhero » Mon Dec 18, 2017 2:18 pm

Hi I am helping my mother do her Naturalisation form and in the guidance notes it simply says:-

As part of your application, you are required to enrol your biometric details for the
purpose of identity verification. You must complete the biometric enrolment section of
the application form. You will then be issued with an enrolment letter, instructing you
to make an appointment at a designated Post Office to have your biometric details
recorded.

but when I phoned up the Weybridge office to ask a few questions they said you bring your completed AN form in first and you will then be asked to get your biometrics, which is correct please anybody???

Once your form AN and supporting documents have been received by UKVI they will send a letter within two to four weeks requesting that the applicant submits their biometrics at a Post Office. NCS is not involved with that process.

On form AN you sign your consent to have the biometrics taken.

We were going to go to the Weybridge office with the AN form as it is not too far and after a phone call to them they said they offer a service where my mother can go in and pay a fee and they help you with it. The only odd thing was they seemed to suggest it had to be totally completed when you go in which seems to defeat the object as she wanted to ask what to put down on a couple of questions.

She was hoping to go in there and get some help completing the form, pay for the help, and only then once completed with their guidance, submit it but they seemed to suggest that she will pay a fee for help bnut at the same time submit it and pay that fee too.

Sorry what does NCS stand for?

Also on the AN form it says if you dont submit your BRP with it you must return it to the Home Office no later than 5 days from the day you attended your Citizen Ceremony, which I dont think she will have to do as she is 78 if I understand correctly, please correct me if I have this mixed up. But this does seem to imply it would be much easier to get the biometrics done in advance so that she can fill out the details on the AN form, can you choose to do it that way so that she can take everything in in one go to Weybridge?

NCS = Nationality Checking Services at the Council.

It is unclear what you mean by 'Weybridge office'?? Do you mean 'Post Office'?

You are confusing a number of things.

Submit the application (either by post or via NCS).

Wait for Home Office to send the biometric enrollment letter, which has a barcode one.

Take the letter to the Post Office, pay the fee and your mother enrolls her biometrics. You CANNOT do the biometrics in advance without this letter.

Then wait for approval.

ALL adults attend the ceremony. She is NOT British until she has attended the ceremony and received her certificate at the ceremony. There is no exemption.

Return the BRP card once she has attended the ceremony.

Naturalisation. Help with just 3 or 4 AN form questions needed please

Post by happyhero » Mon Jan 08, 2018 12:38 pm

Hi I’m helping my Mother with Naturalisation and the AN form and there are some questions I am not sure about, please can somebody help us.

She is German and has lived in the UK since she was 18 in 1957. She has always kept her German passport but after lots of discussion wants to be Naturalised and get a British Passport.

Unfortunately for her the German Embassy in London took her passport off her when she renewed it way back in the past, which meant they took away the only evidence she had to prove she had been given permission to stay here indefinitely so she recently applied for and received a permanent residence card.

She is now 78 and I understand due to age she won’t have to do some parts of the AN requirements. She is extremely fluent in English but has no qualifications for English.

So this is where we are not sure about things. On the AN form, question 1.22, as far as we understand she will tick the last paragraph which says
“I wish to claim exemption on the basis of my age, physical or mental condition (physical and/or mental illness may not lead automatically to exemption. You should provide reasons on page 22. Your application may fail and the fee retained if insufficient reasons for exemption are provided).”

Is this correct and what should we enter on page 22? Should we just write I am 78 and wish to claim exemption on the basis of age?

Immediately after that is question 1.23 which says, “Please provide details of your English language test” Do we just ignore this and leave it blank due to her age or is that not exempted in which case what should she do?

Now moving on in the form, question 5.1 is about the Referee and it requires that the referee be of a certain standing, well my mother has a friend who is the candidate for the local council for the Liberal party; do you think that would be ok for the main referee for the purposes of question 5.1?

Lastly with section 6 which refers to the biometrics, I have been told that you cannot do the biometrics until you’ve sent the form off and received something to say go and get biometrics, so do you just leave the whole of section 6 blank including signing 6.17 to be left blank?

The answer may be obvious but I ask this as it just seems odd that the form has this section yet you send it off with it all blank, only to end up with all the answers for the boxes in section when you no longer have the form.

Any advice/help appreciated.

Just state due to age. They will see her age in any case from the personal details.

Now moving on in the form, question 5.1 is about the Referee and it requires that the referee be of a certain standing, well my mother has a friend who is the candidate for the local council for the Liberal party; do you think that would be ok for the main referee for the purposes of question 5.1?
Refer to this list for professional referee types: https://www.gov.im/media/624353/listofreferees.pdf. The one you mentioned could be the other one required.

Lastly with section 6 which refers to the biometrics, I have been told that you cannot do the biometrics until you’ve sent the form off and received something to say go and get biometrics, so do you just leave the whole of section 6 blank including signing 6.17 to be left blank?

If you refer to the beginning of the form section 6 you either answer YES or NO whether you have a BRP. If it's NO then go to the end of the section and sign that you are willing to give your biometrics. Nothing more to be answered.

Any advice/help appreciated.

Which documents can I use as proof of living in UK

Post by happyhero » Thu Jan 18, 2018 4:48 pm

We doing the online AN form which seems better somehow and we are up to the documentation bit and confused what is required.

The part we are not sure about is

“Mandatory documents”
“Other documents
If you do not provide these documents, your application may be delayed or refused.(Required)
Proof of living in the UK for Mrs xxxxxxxxxxx
If you are an EEA National, you need to include letters from employers, educational establishments, or other Government Departments indicating your presence in the United Kingdom during the relevant period.”

When my mother applied for residence document she had to get 3 years proof of her state and private pension, will these 2 items be ok to use for this requirement on the AN form, I mean DWP is a government department isn’t it? And it does prove living in the UK doesn’t it? (my step father is born British so 3 years is the requirement I believe).

Also if these are ok do I just send the DWP pension or the private pension too?

I guess you have no choice but to send the pensions documents, DWP alone should be ok but best to attach the private pension documents as well. Perhaps point out that these were used for PR as well. If UKVI have issues with this they will contact you.

AN form photo requirement, obvious or is it?

Post by happyhero » Thu Jan 25, 2018 1:13 pm

Hi, I am helping my mother complete her AN form online and we seem to have finally got through everything and we are right at the end. Probably typical of this sort of form, but some questions you read get worse the more you read them and you end up thinking how ambiguous they are and so could be answered differently.

Anyway we are doing this online and on the declaration page it says:-

Declaration

By sending this application, you confirm that to the best of your knowledge and belief the following is correct:

the information relating to the application
the supporting documents
the photograph is an accurate likeness

My question refers to the very last part, what photo do they mean? Are we supposed to include a seperate photo? There is no reference to the Referee forms here so what photo are they talking about? I'm worried they want a separate photo and if they do, do we put anything on the back? Why could the sentence here not read "the photograph on the Referee form is an accurate likeness". I think its confusing like this. No photo is asked for on the Documents required page but then maybe that's because a photo is not really a document (as illustrated by the fact it is listed after "the supporting documents above). I've checked both the form and the guide but see no requirement for an extra photo.

On the old paper form (now using as a rough practice copy) I have, it has a space in the Referee section to stick the photo there so that it ends up being within the AN form whereas doing the online version makes you print out 2 Referee forms with photos to be put on each. Makes me think the online question is talking about the old paper form.

Oh I could go on but hopefully you know what I am asking.

Please advise anybody who can help here.

All applicants are required to submit photos and have referees sign the form.

Assuming you mean 'your' photos on the referee page then yes.
