Visa/Passport Information for Child

I have a child born in pakistan, i am a british citizen and was told i can get a british passport made for him. Just wanted to know the proccess for him to get a passport made, while i sort out a visa for the wife.

vinny what is the purpose of this optional registration facility in embassies. does it give any added protection or benefits etc. could you throw some light on this issue please

If your child is born outside the UK you can register the birth with the nearest consulate or with our consular department in London if you’ve returned to the UK. You don’t have to do this, but if you do your child will be given a British style birth certificate and the birth will be registered at the General Registry Office in the UK.

We recommend consular birth registration because it means you’ll be able to get extra copies of the certificate from the General Registry Office in the future.

I find it amazing that some people are so passionately against the idea of something that will make their child's life easier.

Reasons include:

1. Much easier to prove British citizenship if passport is ever lost/stolen (getting a new one in those circumstances requires status to be proven from scratch).

2. Not reliant on one single source to prove child's citizenship (unreliable government record keeping).

3. A British birth certificate may be easier to use in many circumstances than a foreign one + translation and will also be easier to replace.
