Can I get a British passport

Post by Scarletpoppy » Tue Jul 10, 2018 4:16 pm

My father has a British passport and is a a British citizen. He was born in 1949 in Tanzania which was a British colony. His father was also a British citizen though he was born in British India in1914 and was a civil servant. My parents were married and I was born in the US in the ‘90’s. Do I have claims to citizenship and if so what form do I fill out for a passport?

Most likely, improbable. The general rule of thumb is that if the person has not had a connection by birth or by descent in the last two generations or registration or naturalisation with the United Kingdom itself (as currently constituted), s/he does not get British citizenship.

I don’t think my father got it through descent? I think the option was available to him as he was born in a British colony as my grandfather was in the service in East Africa. So shouldn’t he have been a British citizen in his own right? And therefore be allowed to pass it down?
