Settlement (Spouse) Visa for South African Husband

Post by AudsFrmSA » Mon May 12, 2008 7:53 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm new to these boards and still trying to find my way around, I"m looking for advice with regards to filling in the visa application for my South African husband, and I'm having a hard time deciding what to fill in under 6.6 Your Life In The UK, the first point asks 'where do you and your sponsor plan to live in the UK?' We have two options, we can stay with a family member or we can go and rent a self-catering place until we know more or less where we'd like to settle and then we'd rent a home. I get the feeling it would probably be better to put down a self-catering place to show that we are independant and self-sufficient, however, how does one actually 'book' a place and get confirmation from the self-catering place, if you don't know when you are actually travelling to the UK, because (a) the visa wouldn't have been approved yet (b) the air line tickes wouldn't have been bought yet either, or is this not really that important. It's so confusing...hope someone can help.....and offer some guidance.

The simple answer is to start with living with the family member. That accommodation must be able to house you & your husband without overcrowding given the current number of occupants the house now has.

It is a fixed address, has a measurable / known number of rooms and narrows the problems of finding accomodation from abroad and securing it without undue cost / hassle.

What I would do though is sign up with private rental agents on the web so you are aware of the costs and likely lead in times to secure a place. If you are living in SA now you might have problems with refrences, lack of UK paperwork, wage slips, bank statements etc etc. Of couse if you have a large amount in the bank - paying 6 months up front rental always brings a smile to any landlords face.

Assume doing a postal application? Turn around time in SA is fairly good 3/4 weeks.
