European Passport? Does the Settlement Visa Qualify?

Post by Donnabryan » Tue May 27, 2008 6:39 pm

I'm finding that for jobs in y inustry they require a European passport. Will my Settlement visa be the equivalent?

Thanks!

Hello

It depends on why they need staff to have a European passport, for example there could be specific security reasons or a need for people to travel and work at very short notice in Europe.

If it is nothing like that they should refer to the following up to date guidance for employers about preventing illegal working, which explains about evidence prospective employees need to show:

Current Guidance

Thank You - I'm in the Aviation industry and they need me to have a UK Passport.

I'm trying to figure out how and when to apply for a passport. The application says something about registration with theHome Office - I've been trying to figure out exactly what that means and am having noluck.

Thanks,

Donna

I think you need to tell us more of your present circumstances: your immigration status. (I presume you are in the UK and you say you have a settlement visa; do you have indefinite leave to be in the UK? If so, when was it granted? How long have you lived in the UK? Are you married to a British citizen? What is your current nationality?)

You are from the US.

The EU aviation industry is one place where you will have a big problem without an EU passport. The main issues are one of security followed by the lack of automatic right of entry to EU countries without a visa.

It really depends on the lengths you or your prospective employer is willing to go to.

The security issue can be overcome, it takes time and will require an input from the US authorities. FAA can help out by supplying the information to CAA if you already have FAA status.

If you are ground staff then once you pass the security check you are mostly there.

If you are aircrew it very much depends on the immigration laws of the countries you would be flying to. EU to EU flights are not a problem for EEA passport holders, hence the request to hold an EU passport. It is not a huge problem but it can put off employers if they need to make special arrangements for non EEA staff. Given the relentless supply of potential employees the industry attracts I imagine the low cost Stupid will not consider you unless you have special skills or abilities.

On the issue of getting a UK passport you do not qualify for one, you have to do 2 years with your spouse visa then get ILR, then wait some more to get naturalisation so you are a good three years away from that.

Clarification

Post by Donnabryan » Wed May 28, 2008 9:12 am

Thanks Everyone - I should have been more clear!

Married one month ago to British citizen

Working in the STates and am not plannng on leaving the states until I secure a pilot job in Europe - preferably the UK

I travel back and forth every couple of weeks to see my husband and concernd about what happens during the Visa Process - will I still be able to come and go through the country

Just applied for a settlement Visa with a biomedical appt next Friday

Just finding that employers want a European passport - How do I get a passport with just a Settlement Visa? I'm concerned that I will have to wait the 2 years to become a citizen before getting the passport and then beng able to work...

Thanks!

You should probably do what frontier mole has written and try to get some sort of clearance from the US that the UK/EU employers might accept. If that doesn't work, then unfortunately there isn't much one can do if they require EU or EEA citizenship....look for another related job, I guess.

See this site for requirements: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/briti ... ofcitizen/

You have to reside in the UK for three years before being eligible for naturalisation.
