Applications made on the basis of Marrige to a British citizen

Post by rominab » Sun Dec 02, 2018 6:19 pm

Hi All ,

Looking for some advice understanding what kind of documents are required in my situation: I am an Italian married to a British citizen and I have been in the UK for 10 years but have not worked.

I am confused by what I need to supply for the British citizenship application. I can supply my passport , my UK permanent residence card, my husbands passport ,my marrige certificate , Life in the UK Test ,English test and referees .

Is this enough? There is a section on needing to supply proof that I have been here for the past 3 years which I am unable to do ( no passport stamps and no work history ) - however it is unclear to me if that section is necessary as I am trying to apply on the basis of Marrige and not on the basis of residence in the United Kingdom.

Thank you very much in advance for any help !

:D Romina.

Your documents so far ar fine - however for residency, as you haven't worked, you should submit official correspondence from goivernment departments, such as HMRC, Council, DWP, etc.

Yes, it is necessary.

Unlike Italian citizenship based on marriage, British citizenship based on marriage to a British citizen also requires residence in the UK. However the residence requirement is reduced (3 years rather than 5 years) for the spouse of a British citizen. You also need to prove that you were physically present in the UK exactly three years before the date of the application.

As Alterhase58 has advised, official correspondence from government departments could be used to prove residence.
