British citizenship question

Post by Shin96 » Thu Dec 06, 2018 10:33 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about claiming British citizenship , being born after January 1983 to a UK born grandparent , and you being born in a former British colony.

On the xxxxx website it states “you or a parent were born in a former British colony, subject to further criteria being met”

I was wondering if anyone knew what this would be , I have paid an immigration consultant who basically had no idea and wrote really and advice and completely dodged my question

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Which "former colony" were you born in?

The idea of that category is that if a British citizen moved to a colony and had a child there, while it was still a colony, the child would still be a British citizen. If you were born after 1983, there are unlikely for there to be any colonies left about.

Hong Kong has a whole separate category of laws that apply to it and does not fall in that category.

For further assistance, state where and when were your grandfather, father and you born and whether they were married at the time of the relevant births (your father's and yours).

Hi ,

It would be the colony of Natal which ended in 1910 and my father was born in 1967, and my grandfather was born in jersey in 1912, I was born in 1996. Thank you it was unclear as they stated “subject to further criteria being met” and it was unclear what this criteria was.

Kind regards
Sinead
