Obtaining the right of abode without citizenship

Post by micasa » Mon Dec 10, 2018 6:08 pm

Hello,
I would like to get advice from the experts on the forum.

Situation:
Both my husband and I come from the countries that do not allow dual citizenship. We would like to keep our respective citizenship as we are not sure where we are going to retire – his country, my country or the UK. Our current passports are quite convenient for traveling so there is no daily inconvenience to live in the UK with an ILR status. However, because of the aging parents, we might have to head back to our home countries for some years if the situation arises. If this happens, I am so afraid that we might lose an ILR.

Question:
Someone told me that we can get around the issue by getting the right of abode but opt out to obtain a British passport when we go through the process of applying for the citizenship. I am not sure if this would work... If I go through this process, wouldn’t I just become a British without a passport?? Can I still claim that I don’t have British citizenship?

Yes you can. however a vignette will stick to your passport state that you have right of abode in the UK. So no difference, your country of origin will know you have UK citizenship by seeing your passport. Can I still claim that I don’t have British citizenship? You must have BC so you have right of abode.

Thanks for your answer cyclina1. So having the Right of Abode will be deemed as having the UK citizenship. That is what I thought. I guess at some point I have to make a decision which country I would become a citizen of unless my home country changes the citizenship rules, which I imagine will not happen in my lifetime...
