English language requirement and name mismatch in degree

HI All,

I am applying for naturalisation in Jan 2019 however realized that my degree has a middle name whereas my passport and all other official documents including permanent residence card do not have the middle name mentioned anywhere.

I have asked a letter from the university but they will only issue a letter with the correct name written on the degree including the middle name - if I submit this to UKNARIC then they will issue me an English language assessment but I guess with the middle name which will be a possible mismatch i believe.

Will this be a problem if I submit the letter with my middle name for naturalisation as all other documents and passport do not have a middle name.

Suggestions please.

Wrt the naturalisation application, I personally do not see this to be an issue, as the degree certificate itself is not confirmation of identity. It would, however, be wise to explain your case in a covering letter supplementing your documents.

If I had to question anything, it would be that since none of your official forms of ID have your middle name included, then how is it that your university has your middle name on record for official purposes? So it would be worth explaining the circumstances of this in the covering letter.

If it's a common thing in your home country that government issued IDs do not include middle names, but they are required by higher education institutions then explaining this should suffice. You did not mention what the letter from your university is about. If this is the case and it's common to have this discrepancy, I would also try to persuade the university to issue a more bespoke letter confirming this. Such a letter does not need to omit your middle name if they aren't willing to do so, but simply confirming the state of affairs.

At the end of the day, you have no control over how your home government and other institutions work. Moreover, a caseworker would likely have had previous dealings with applications from nationals of your home country, so if this is a common case then they are very likely to be aware of this and not consider it as a problem on the grounds of dozens of previous applications having had the same, but I would mention it regardless.

Thank you so much for your response - its much appreciated.

The letter from the university is to secure the English language assessment from UKNARIC where they require a letter from the university stating the medium of instruction of the degree was English.

The university is happy to issue the letter however as explained including the middle name which isn't mentioned on any of the official docs inc passport.

Anyway i will write a letter to the HO explaining the fact that the middle name is no longer in use and i have sufficient evidence to prove this via passport, electoral cards, UK full drivers licence, tenancy agreements, utility bills etc.

Although i am trying if the university can issue the letter without the middle name but i doubt.

I hope HO will accept this cover letter with an explanation and approve my naturalisation.
