Naturalisation with PR letter

Post by CG21 » Fri Jan 25, 2019 10:36 am

Hello,

I'd like to apply for British citizenship.

I have a stamped letter with reference number from the Home Office granting me permanent residence from 2002. I don't have a card as I was under 18 at the time.

Can I apply for citizenship with this letter or do I need to get a PR card?

The options for a PR card seem to be to replace a lost copy or to apply on the five year rule but I haven't lost the letter and I already have PR.

Any feedback or experiences from people in a similar position would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The letter granting you PR should suffice.

Note that HO might expect you to submit evidence of continuous residence since 2002 to prove you have not lost your PR status by being out of the UK for 2 or more years.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm gathering study/employer letters at the moment. Hopefully that'll be enough.

Thanks for your help.

You will likely also need P60s or an HMRC employment history if you don't have P60s.

Noted.

I'll make sure I have HMRC employment history to have all bases covered.

Thanks again.

Just another question...

My letter says I have 'permanent residence' and I had a 'no time limit' stamp in my then passport.

Does this make it permanent residence or indefinite leave to remain?

If this was given to you as an EU citizen it is PR (under EU regulations) - ILR is under UK immigration regulations (for non-EU citizens). Same concept different routes.

What was the issue date of the letter?

If dated after 2006, it would be PR under the EEA Regulations. If before that date, it would be ILR under the UK Immigration Rules.
