ILR to Settlement

Post by tribalboy » Mon Jun 23, 2008 11:08 am

Hi Guys,

I have been on ILR for a year now and was looking to apply for citizenship and had a question.

I got married last year and was on HSMP when I married, my wife was given a dependant visa and we both applied for ILR at the same time.I wanted to know if my wife can apply for citizenship as well along with me or does she have to wait for 3 years before she can apply.

Apologies if this has been answered before but when I tried to search all I could find was UK citizens applying for their spouses.

1. You can't apply for citizenship jointly until both of you meet the 5 year residence requirement. And the rules may have changed by then.

2. It would be better for you to naturalise now. Then as soon as your wife hits the 3 year residence requirement for spouses of British citizens, she can then naturalise. Again, if the rules are the same.

sorry for not mentioning this but I had been on a work permit for 4 years and on HSMP for 1 year and then got my ILR. I have been on ILR now for 1 year and I guess I can now apply for citizenship. But as you guys mention my wife would probably need to be resident here for 3 years more before she can be naturalised. Can you please correct me if I am wrong here
